What are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google search results. Built on Google’s Gemini models, they combine information from several web pages into a short answer and show links to the sources they used. They grew out of Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) and became widely available in 2024.

AI Overviews are Google’s own AI answer, written from several websites and shown above the normal results, with links to the sources.
How it works
How AI Overviews works
- Step 1 Google decidesFor queries where a summary helps, often complex or multi-part questions, Google triggers an AI Overview.
- Step 2 Retrieves pagesIt pulls relevant pages from its own index, using its normal ranking systems as a starting point.
- Step 3 Generates a summaryGemini writes a short answer that combines the information, sometimes with steps or lists.
- Step 4 Shows sourcesLinks to the pages used appear beside or within the overview.
Example
An example of AI Overviews
Someone in Pune searches “best way to reduce home loan EMI”. Instead of only ten links, Google shows an AI Overview explaining prepayment, balance transfer and tenure changes, with links to a bank’s guide, a finance publication and a comparison site. The bank whose guide is cited gains visibility and trust, even for users who never scroll down.
Why it matters
Why AI Overviews matters
They sit above everything
AI Overviews take the most prominent space on the page, pushing organic results down.
They change click behaviour
Some users get their answer without clicking, while cited sources can gain qualified visits.
Citations signal authority
Being a cited source reinforces your brand as an expert on the topic.
Getting cited
How to appear in AI Overviews
Google says there is nothing special required beyond normal SEO best practice: pages must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. In practice, the pages we see cited most share a few traits:
- They answer the question clearly near the top of the page
- They cover the topic in more depth than competitors, including related sub-questions
- They are well structured, with headings, lists and tables
- They come from sites Google already trusts for the topic
- They are accurate and up to date
You can see AI Overview traffic grouped with regular web results in Search Console’s Performance report.
Compared
AI Overviews vs featured snippets
Both answer the question on the results page, in different ways.
| AI Overviews | Featured snippets | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | AI-written summary from several sources | A quoted extract from one page |
| Sources | Multiple links | One link |
| Format | Paragraphs, lists, steps | Paragraph, list or table from the page |
| Control | You influence through content quality | You can target with concise answers |
| Measurement | Included in Search Console web results | Visible in rank trackers and Search Console |
Checklist
How to check if you appear in AI Overviews
- Search your top 20 questions in Google India and note which show an AI Overview
- Check whether your pages are linked as sources
- Compare cited pages with yours: depth, structure and freshness
- Make sure the pages are indexed and allowed to show snippets
- Track impressions and clicks for those queries in Search Console
Timeline
How AI Overviews evolved
Google first tested generative answers as the Search Generative Experience (SGE) in Search Labs in 2023. In May 2024 it launched AI Overviews to all users in the United States, then expanded to more countries and languages, including India, later that year. In 2025 Google added AI Mode, a conversational search experience that goes further than a single overview.
For businesses, the direction is clear: more answers are written by AI on the results page, so being a trusted, citable source is becoming as important as ranking.
Measuring
How to measure AI Overview visibility
Search Console groups AI Overview impressions and clicks with regular web results, so there is no separate report yet. Track a fixed list of priority questions, record each month whether an AI Overview appears and whether your site is cited, and compare impressions and click-through rates for those queries over time.
