What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that answer engines, such as Google’s featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice assistants and AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Perplexity, can find it, trust it and quote it as the direct answer to a question. It focuses on clear questions, concise answers, structured data and authority.

- Measured by citations and mentions, not only clicks

AEO means writing and marking up your content so that when someone asks a question, the machine answering it uses your words and names your brand.
How it works
How AEO works
- Step 1 Find the questionsCollect the real questions buyers ask: People Also Ask boxes, sales calls, support tickets and AI prompts.
- Step 2 Answer firstOpen each page or section with a 40–60 word answer that stands on its own, then expand with detail.
- Step 3 Structure the pageUse question-style headings, lists, tables and FAQ blocks so machines can extract the answer cleanly.
- Step 4 Add structured dataMark up FAQs, how-tos, products, organisations and authors with schema so engines understand context.
- Step 5 Build trustShow named authors, sources, reviews and mentions on other sites, because answer engines prefer sources they trust.
Example
An example of AEO
A Kolkata dental clinic wants to appear when people ask, “How much does a root canal cost in Kolkata?” Its old page listed services with no prices. After an AEO rewrite, the treatment page opens with a direct answer (“A root canal in Kolkata typically costs Custom quote–Custom quote, depending on the tooth and whether a crown is needed”), followed by a cost table, a short explanation of what affects price, a dentist-reviewed FAQ and FAQ schema.
The result is a page that Google can lift into a featured snippet, that AI Overviews can cite, and that ChatGPT can summarise accurately when a patient asks for advice.
Why it matters
Why AEO matters
Fewer clicks, more answers
More searches end on the results page or in an AI answer. Being the quoted source keeps your brand visible even without a click.
Voice and AI assistants pick one answer
Assistants often give a single answer. If it is not yours, you are invisible for that question.
Trust compounds
Brands that are repeatedly cited become the default recommendation, which also lifts branded searches.
AEO tactics
AEO tactics that work in 2026
Write for the question, not the keyword. Use the exact question as a heading and answer it in the first sentence underneath.
Keep answers self-contained. An answer engine may quote a single paragraph out of context, so each answer should make sense on its own, including who, what and how much.
Use tables for comparisons and costs. Tables are easy for engines to read and often appear directly in answers.
Show who wrote it. Named authors with credentials, reviewed dates and links to sources make content more quotable, especially for health, finance and legal topics.
Earn mentions elsewhere. AI answers draw on reviews, directories, news and forums. Being described consistently across those sources makes you easier to recommend.
Measure citations. Track featured snippets in Search Console and test your key questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity every month.
Compared
AEO vs SEO vs GEO
Three overlapping disciplines with different goals.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be the direct answer to a question | Be mentioned and recommended by AI assistants |
| Where it shows | Organic blue links | Featured snippets, voice, AI Overviews | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Mode |
| Main levers | Technical health, content, links | Question-led structure, concise answers, schema | Entity clarity, citations across the web, answer-first content |
| Success metric | Rankings, traffic, conversions | Snippets won, answers quoted | Mention rate and accuracy in AI answers |
| Relationship | The foundation | Builds on SEO | Builds on SEO and AEO |

History
Where AEO came from
The idea of answer engine optimisation dates back to featured snippets, which Google introduced in 2014, and to voice assistants such as Google Assistant and Alexa, which read out a single answer. Marketers realised that being “position zero” mattered more than being the first blue link for many questions.
Generative AI changed the scale. Since 2023, AI chatbots and Google’s AI Overviews have answered millions of questions by combining several sources. The principle is the same, give the clearest, most trustworthy answer, but the number of places where an answer can appear has multiplied.
Myths
Common AEO myths
“AEO is just writing FAQs.” FAQs help, but answer engines also rely on authority, freshness, entity data and mentions across the web.
“Short answers mean thin content.” The best AEO pages pair a concise answer with real depth underneath, because engines evaluate the whole page.
“You need special code.” Schema helps engines understand content, but plain, well-structured HTML is what gets quoted.
“AEO only matters for big brands.” Niche and local questions are often the easiest to win.
Content types
Which content types work best for AEO
Definitions and explainers answer “what is” questions and are frequently quoted word for word. Cost and comparison pages answer the questions buyers ask just before they decide, and tables make them easy to extract. How-to guides with numbered steps suit voice assistants and AI summaries. Local service pages that state prices, areas and timings clearly win “near me” questions. FAQ sections on product and service pages capture follow-up questions without needing separate pages.
Whatever the format, put the answer first, keep it accurate and date it, because answer engines prefer content they can trust to be current.
